Duties of an Insured
Every insurance policy is different but they typically have these things included and or elaborated on. It is important to follow the specific policy guidelines in the section dedicated to “The Insureds Duties After A Loss”.
1) Provide a prompt notice of an occurrence or loss often referred to as the loss notice. In other words, CALL your insurance company and report the loss or give us a call and we can do it for you. Call now: (850) 814-3489
2) Cooperate with the investigation although this is best done with or through your public adjuster as misspoken words can come back to bite you in the end.
3) Complying with any Examination Under Oath.
4) Truthfully represent pertinent facts.
5) Do the best you can to prevent further damage. A good rule of thumb is to at least spend your deductible amount in preventative measures. For example: A Tree limb falls on your house during a storm and creates a hole allowing rainwater in. It would be advisable to have the tree limb removed and a temporary tarp put over the hole at minimum. This shows good faith on your part as the home owner. Be sure to take photos of the damage prior to any temporary repairs.
6) Document, Photograph, and Video Tape as much as possible. It is good to have both photos and videos. If you have taken 10 photos, take an additional 100 photos. You cannot have enough photos of damage immediately following a damaging occurrence.
